Walid Jibrin, chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) board of trustees (BoT), says the party will do whatever it takes to keep Nyesom Wike from defecting.
Jibrin stated this while addressing journalists in Kaduna on Monday.
Wike, the governor of Rivers, ran for the PDP presidential ticket but lost to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Wike accused southern stakeholders of “betrayal” following the presidential primary in May.
Also, when it came to selecting a vice-presidential candidate, Wike was said to be the top choice among the three preferred candidates, but Abubakar chose Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta.
Following the development, there have been speculations that the Rivers governor may defect; he has also recently been visited by several politicians, including Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Jibrin stated that a reconciliation committee will be formed to visit the Rivers governor to ensure that the party remains united ahead of the 2023 elections.
“We in PDP know how to solve our problems. We know that governor Nyesom Wike may not be happy. It is the intention of this party to constitute a reconciliation committee that will meet Wike to talk to him, appeal to him, and pray that he will not leave our party,” he said.
Jibrin called Wike “a great man who has been fighting for the party, and the party will not want to see him leave.”
He also stated that the PDP will meet with everyone who voted in the primaries.
“We will all go to Wike together, and if that means kneeling to Wike, we will kneel for him,” said the BoT chairman.
He also urged party members to unite to win the 2023 elections, noting that the PDP lost the recent governorship election in Ekiti due to a lack of unity.
