Nottingham Forest are close to the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi. The Reds are getting Awoniyi by activating a release clause worth around £17 million (N12B).

The 24-year-old talisman will jet into England today to undergo a medical prior to signing for Forest.

Awoniyi is a former Liverpool striker who has spent the last two seasons playing for Union Berlin.

His work permit issues prevented him from making an appearance for the Reds and last summer they opted to sell him.

His maiden campaign as a permanent Union Berlin star proved a superb one for the powerful player.

Awoniyi fired 20 goals in all competitions and helped the Bundesliga outfit qualify for the Europa League.

His form meant that he had the choice of clubs to choose from this summer.

It’s been suggested that RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and other clubs in the Premier League were all interested.

Awoniyi has chosen to head back to the Premier League though, with Forest now set to secure his signature.

The striker said his goodbyes to his teammates on Wednesday and left the training ground with his belongings.

Now, a new chapter beckons and as a full international a work permit will be easily obtained this time around.

Awoniyi will bolster a Forest squad in desperate need of some new attacking options.

Keinan Davis has returned to Aston Villa, leaving Sam Surridge as the only senior striker on the books.

Lewis Grabban has been offered a new contract and the statement signing of Awoniyi might convince him to stick around.
