New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is set to hand Thomas Tuchel a £200 million war chest this summer as the Blues look to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool.

The American’s £4.25 billion takeover of the club has finally been given the go-ahead by the British government, signalling the end of the Roman Abramovich era, with an official announcement expected later today.

It’s understood that the Boehly-led consortium want to make it clear to Tuchel that they’re serious about turning Chelsea back into a force of nature and are prepared to splash the cash in order to make it happen.

Nearly three months have passed since sanctions were imposed on Abramovich following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and in that time Chelsea have been threatened with expulsion from the Premier League league, expulsion from the Champions League, and even liquidation. So this morning’s news will be music to the ears of fans who – for the first time since 2003 – have genuinely feared for the long-term future of the club.

A Government spokesperson said: “Following extensive work, we are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual. We will now begin the process of ensuring the proceeds of the sale are used for humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting victims of the war.”
