Larry Gaaga, a Nigerian record label executive, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, has been named Vice President, A&R at Def Jam Africa, a division of Universal Music Group (UMG).
Larry Gaaga will now lead the A&R division across English-speaking markets, reporting to Sipho Dlamini, CEO of Universal Music South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Company revealed in the announcement that Larry Gaaga’s team will be tasked with identifying and signing African continental talent that “speaks to and resonates with the defining culture and artistry of the Def Jam legacy.”
According to Def Jam, Gaaga was one of Def Jam Africa’s “flagship signings” in 2020, and his appointment “reaffirms the label’s belief and respect of Larry’s artistry and creative vision.”
Larry began his career at YSG Entertainment in 2010, where he rose to the position of General Manager. During his time at YSG, he established himself as a top A&R, artist, and manager, as well as managing rapper Vector.
Larry Gaaga has worked with several top artists, including Davido, Wizkid, D’banj, Tu Baba, Burna Boy, and Patoranking.
“I’m ecstatic about the opportunity I’ve been given here at Def Jam Africa.” Larry Gaaga says this about his new position. “My experience as an artist and manager at the label not only provides me with a unique perspective to share with our talent, but it also means I’m well versed in the spirit and culture of this legacy label,” he added.
