The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has officially declared his intention to succeed his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki, as the next governor of the state in the 2024 election. He made the declaration in a pre-recorded speech that was aired today, after weeks of speculation about his plans.
Shaibu said he was running for the office of the governor under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that he was confident that with the support of the people, he could take Edo State to even greater heights. He said his campaign would be built upon five core pillars, each vital to the transformation and prosperity of the state.
He also launched his campaign office in Benin City, the state capital, after the declaration. The invitation to the launch, dated November 23, 2023, stated that Shaibu was offering himself to serve as the Chief Servant (Governor) of Edo State.
Shaibu’s declaration sets the stage for a showdown between him and Obaseki, who is reportedly backing another candidate to succeed him. The two have been at loggerheads in recent months over various issues.
