Human Rights Lawyer Inihebe Effiong Regains Freedom

Human rights lawyer Inihebe Effiong has been released from prison in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State’s capital, after serving a 30-day sentence for alleged contempt of court.

Mr. Effiong was sentenced to prison by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot,  on July 27 after objecting to the presence of two armed police officers in the courtroom.

Mr. Effiong was released from prison at 8 a.m. to loud cheers from supporters and well-wishers who had gathered to greet him.

He then told reporters that his imprisonment had strengthened his resolve to fight for truth and justice in Nigeria..
