On the momentous occasion of Nigeria’s 7th consecutive democratic transition on May 25th, 2023, history was made as the transition process unfolded under the guidance of an Executive Order. The significance of this milestone cannot be overstated, as it reflects the evolving nature of our beloved nation’s democratic journey.
In adherence to the time-honoured tradition of honouring Nigerian presidents and vice presidents with the highest national honours, and in accordance with the provisions of the National Honours Act Cap N43LFN 2004, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari conferred the esteemed rank of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) upon President-Elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Likewise, Vice-President-Elect Kashim Shettima was bestowed with the prestigious title of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). These national honours serve as a testament to the exceptional contributions and distinguished service rendered by these esteemed leaders.
Following the investiture of national honours, a pivotal moment in the transition process unfolded—the official handover of transition documents to the incoming Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This symbolic gesture solidifies the transfer of responsibilities and marks the commencement of a new chapter in Nigeria’s governance.
The transition documents handed over to President-Elect Tinubu encompassed a comprehensive range of essential materials. Among them were detailed briefing notes on each of the Nine Priority Areas of the Muhammadu Buhari administration, providing invaluable insights into the current state of affairs. Additionally, a compendium capturing priority programs and implemented projects offered a comprehensive overview of the strides made during the previous administration. Lastly, a meticulously compiled Policy Status Update was included, designed to preserve institutional memory and facilitate a seamless continuation of government efforts under the incoming administration.
This ceremony represents the first phase of a two-part event designed to legislate and institutionalize the government and administration of Nigeria’s newly elected democratic president. It serves as a clear testament to the commitment to continuity, transparency, and effective governance that underpins Nigeria’s democratic principles.
As the baton of leadership is passed from one administration to another, it is a moment of collective reflection and collective responsibility. It is an opportunity for unity, progress, and the consolidation of the democratic gains achieved thus far. The investiture of national honours and the official handover of transition documents embody the principles of democratic governance, ensuring a smooth transfer of power and setting the stage for the incoming administration to build upon the foundations laid by their predecessors.
