Grammy award-winning artist, Shakira, may face trial in Spain for allegedly committing tax evasion against the Spanish public treasury.
The trial’s commencement date has yet to be determined. However, a judge ordered that the case be heard in court. Shakira failed to pay wealth and income taxes between 2012 and 2014, according to Spanish prosecutors. The unpaid tax is currently worth $15.8 million.

Shakira, on her part, has refuted the allegations. In an interview published earlier this month in Elle Magazine, the singer stated that she paid what they claimed she owed even before they filed the lawsuit and that she currently owes them nothing.
Furthermore, the Spanish authorities claim that she lived in Spain for 183 days between 2011 and 2014. However, her attorneys believe this is also incorrect, claiming that her primary residence during this time was the Bahamas.
If Shakira is found guilty during her trial, she will most likely face an eight-year prison sentence and pay some fines.
