Tensions rise in Rivers House Of Assembly After Impeachment Threat

A heavy security presence was observed at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, on Monday morning, following an explosion that rocked the building on Sunday night.

The blast, which was reportedly caused by political thugs, destroyed the hallowed chamber of the House of Assembly, where the lawmakers conduct their legislative business.

Sources said the attack was linked to a planned impeachment move against the Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Eddison Ehie, who is also the former deputy speaker of the 9th Assembly.

The impeachment plot was allegedly aimed at clearing the way for a possible impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has been facing political pressure from some quarters.

More than 50 security operatives from the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) cordoned off the complex and the surrounding area, while about 17 patrol vehicles and four armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were deployed to the scene.

The complex is located opposite the Court of Appeal complex and adjacent to the Police Command headquarters in Port Harcourt.
