The election petition tribunal in Sokoto State has affirmed the victory of former governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District.
The tribunal, headed by Justice Denis Echesi, dismissed the petition filed by Senator Ibrahim Danbaba of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who challenged Tambuwal’s election on the grounds of non-compliance with the electoral Act.
The petitioner had sought the declaration of the election as inconclusive and the order for rerun elections in twenty-eight polling units where he claimed elections were not held in February and April.
The tribunal, however, ruled that the petition lacked merit and that the petitioner failed to prove his allegations with credible evidence.
The tribunal also ordered the petitioner to pay two hundred thousand naira each to Tambuwal and the PDP as costs.
While Tambuwal’s counsel, Suleiman Usman (SAN), praised the judgement as a reflection of the will of the people of Sokoto South, Danbaba’s counsel, Mr Chris Ndeoyiro, said they would study the judgement and decide on their next step.
