The 50th American Music Awards took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Afrobeats superstars Wizkid and Tems were part of the night’s winners.
Wizkid was named the favourite Afrobeats artist, beating out nominees such as Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, Tems, and Ckay.
The Made in Lagos singer also won best R&B song for his song “Essence,” which features Tems. Tems also won the best hip-hop song award for her contribution on Future’s “Wait 4 You.”
Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican performer, received the most nominations this year, with eight, including his first-ever for artist of the year. He ended up winning two awards: best male Latin artist and best Latin album for “Un Verano Sin Ti.”
Taylor Swift, on the other hand, was the night’s biggest winner, taking home awards in all six categories in which she was nominated, including artist of the year, the night’s top honour. Swift now has 40 career AMA wins, making her the most decorated artist in AMA history.
Lionel Richie, a 17-time AMA winner, received the Icon Award in recognition of his career contributions to the music industry. Richie received a heartfelt tribute performance from Charlie Puth, Stevie Wonder, and other artists.
